Hi all!

I'm a hopeful fanfic writer who is completely and utterly overwhelmed by the amount of brilliant writing on the web. Seriously, most of my favourite writers are now people who fanfiction I read and not original fiction authors.

I'd like to thank Poi Lass for her brilliantly humourous stories (to put it mildly), Amanda Sichter for making me understand so many characters, as well as all the dark stories I love, Alicia McKenzie who made me go from 'Cable who?' to Cable and Domino being my number one couple, Kaylee for all her beautiful stories and everyone else who writes so well! Keep it up because you're an inspiration to us all.

Hello all.

Latex posted this fine story a couple of weeks ago (3/17/01) but I only now caught up to it. It is unusual to feedback publicly so long after publication, but "Ain't Nothin' Like Regret" is well worth it.

This story beautifully illustrates the very elements that brought me to fan fiction: it takes the filigree and shadow that has swirled around for years in canon and makes it substantial and concrete. There are probably a hundred stories that treat Logan's murderous past as Weapon X, but few have so successfully shown the man he has become grappling with the thing that he was. Without ever degenerating into the trite and repetitious angsty monologue that often plagues the form, Latex gives us a Wolverine working desperately to conquer his baser instincts.

All of the forgoing implies that "Nothin' Like Regret" is some quiet and introspective tale. Nothing could be further from the truth. The piece is a compelling mystery of false death and fiery vengeance. The action sequences sing, and the tension increases throughout such that you end up on the edge of your seat.

I encourage everyone to give "Ain't Nothin' Like Regret" a try - you will not be disappointed.

Best,
Xander

I would like to thank Rossi for her continued heartfelt support and feedback. She recently sent me a note that blew my mind and will probably feed my writing aspirations for a long time to come. Thank you Rossi for making this fanfic thing worth while.

Three lovely bits of praise, one from Alicia McKenzie, another from Lyss and lastly a bit of anonymous praise. I don't know about you guys... but these all made me feel rather gooey inside. And in the best way. :-)

Alicia McKenzie takes a moment out of her hectic schedule to laud some stories posted to OTL. Hmm... makes us wonder if perhaps she's been studying too hard. :-)

May 1, 2000 was Archivists' Day, a day for readers and writers alike to thank those of us who maintain and run various archives of this sort on the web. Both Joannie and myself paid tribute to all archivists out there on C-FAN's message boards and I've put them here so every day can be archivists' day.

Out of all the Fan-fiction I've read, and believe me, it's a lot, Alicia McKenzie deserves a good bit of gratitude. Her writing has made me laugh when I thought I couldn't, cry 'till I had no more tears, and see characters that I hadn't really looked at in a different light. Her writing goes beyond the normal, spinning out tales as elbarate as Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" (and for those of you who don't know of it, it's an eight book arc, each ranging in about a thousand pages, that doesn't seem to be stopping any time soon).

Anyway, I would just like to give Miss McKenzie tribute and hope that she will continue her writing, giving someone else that chance to smile.

We've all heard the warnings. We've all trembled in fear at the possibility of her arrival. So get out from under your desks and run for the hills! Mitai the Critic has struck! And this time her victim is Indigo's Thirteen. Beware ye mighty for she has no mercy! :-)

No, really. It's not as brutal as it sounds... here, Jaya Mitai does a wonderful and witty review of Indigo's stunning story. Read it, live it, love it. You won't be sorry.

Recently the fanfic world was rocked hard by the announcement that writer and archivist Lori McDonald will no longer be running her archive.  (Don't fear, all of you who are worried that the stories will go the way of the dodo... Ro will be taking over Lori's archive shortly to keep that particular fanfic landmark from vanishing. :)   Maelstrom here had a few words in tribute to the mega-talented Lori M...

SassyKat.

Are you tired of the same old fan-fic? Are you longing for something new? Fresh? Outragous? Well, m'friends, I'm here to tell you the answer to all of those questions and more. Go read *EVERYTHING*, not some, not a little, but *EVERYTHING* by PoiLass. This particular person has a great flair for the fan-fic genre. Humor has you laughing until tears are running down your face, the serious stuff is done in such a great way that I'm leaving it up to *you* to go see for yourself. Do it. You shan't be disappointed.

Here's something from Ana/Lyssie, who's another one of those people who just perks up a room. ;-)

Hokay.. Serves me right for reading them all in one sitting..

To all the authors who have answered the Faces of Hate challenge, Bravo! Some of them made me go Hmm, some made me smile, some made me cry. They all struck a chord within me. Are we losing our humanity? Thank you for wonderful stories. :)

Hugs, Ana/Lyssie

First, thank Dan Heaven for the kudos here.  I'm starting to think that feedbackers need feedback, too, so if you see your name here, drop him a line of gratitude, eh? ;-

I am the High Priest of the Intergalactic Temple of the Goddess Kaylee; convert, heathens, that we may all worship together. Now, let us view the Holy Texts!

But I can only have one #1 favorite; lots of others are close...Lori McDonald... Poi Lass... Abyss... Indigo... Batya... Darqstar...Valerie Jones... JF Jackson... (my memory sucks, and I'm forgetting a lot of folks who deserve to be praised to the skies); go read EVERYTHING they have written! It ALL is great, trust me!

Next, speaking of feedbackers needing feedback... ;-)  Many folks on the OTL mailing list -- and, if I'm not mistaken, on ACFF as well -- have come to know Sean Duggan as the fellow who tries the hardest to make writers feel appreciated.   This is a guy who read almost everything to come through OTL (and if you're not on OTL, just take my word for it...that's a lot of stories), and who went above and beyond to make sure he commented.  A short while ago, Sean informed the mailing list that Real Life was demanding his attention (selfish thing, that), and that he was <gasp!> leaving OTL.  Some denizens of the fanfic IRC chatroom -- the Subreality Cafe; and if you're interested in finding out more about it, check out CFAN -- decided that Sean needed a tribute to usher him on his way and let him know he's appreciated.  Thank Samy Merchi for the idea and Jaya Mitai for the scripting.   Everyone else in here was a horrified witness to the crushing news.

A tribute to Sean Duggan.

And now my own praise to a few writers whose work I love...

Poi Lass crafts humor and drama with equal skill, and never ceases to entertain.  Indigo has shown her skill at a wide range of topics and emotions.  Matt Nute uses personal knowledge to craft intense and powerful stories.  Kielle (besides being the beloved CFAN Scribe ;-) handles the solemn and the ridiculous with matching ease.  Laersyn tackles some of the harder to digest topics, and writes them with insight.  Dex mingles sensitivity and brutal bluntness in his work, which makes a compelling story that's hard to put down.   Amanda Sichter brings you right in to sit beside the characters and to share in their feelings -- which can mean pain, it should be noted. sevenall manages with so few words to create a rich tapestry of emotion and action.  Luba Kmetyk has made it her mission to keep Pryde and Wisdom together, and she's accomplished that with intriguing storylines, steamy subplots ;-), and a sure hand.  DuAnn Cowart is a pioneer in the fanfic world with her reknowned "Just Lucky I Guess," and is just a plain nice gal besides. ;)  Alicia McKenzie is a story-smith, who somehow manages to keep more plots and twists straight than I think I'd ever be brave enough to attempt.   Dr. Benway tackles that which makes the stomach churn, and in doing so makes us face ugly things that are a part of the world, like it or not.

There's more, but I'll save it for another day.  I've got a LOT of archiving work to do. ;-)
